According to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), Chinese have consumed more than 49.3 million gigabytes of mobile data since the Lunar New Year. That amounts to an average daily data usage of 54.8 megabytes per person.
The lack of wifi in many rural Chinese homes could be one of the reasons for this data explosion. Further, very few Chinese work over the week that follows the Lunar New Year so mobile users have more free time to use their phones. Of course, the red envelope craze also accounts for the rapid increase in data consumption.
